Squash - Black Beauty Zucchini, (Cucurbita pepo), Seeds Open Pollinated Heirloom Non GMO All-America Selections winner 56 days Dark green, glossy fruits with creamy white flesh are long, straight & slender. Firm, very tender, good flavor. The fruits grow 10 to 12 inches long and 3-1/2 inches wide at maturity. This squash is best picked at immature stage of 6 to 8 inches long. The larger fruits are good for grating and for use in baking. This squash freezes well. Plants are fast growing, compact and easy to grow. Plants produce an abundance of delicious fruit which is continually produced through summer until frost. Use in soups, salads, and casseroles. Great sliced thin for dips, battered and fried or baked. Freezes well. Harvest while skins are still tender, pick really small for "baby zucchini." GENERAL GROWING INFORMATION Sowing: 1" Deep, Start early indoors in pots and transplant after last spring frost. Can also be seeded directly into rich, fertile soil after soil temperature is 72ºF. Germination 7-10 days, 72ºF. Squash are usually big plants, so space plants at least 3 to 6 feet apart. Height: 18-24 inches Spread: 18 inches Spacing: Row: 4 foot Spacing: Hills: 3 foot Light: Full Sun Usually sown in groups ("hills") of 4-6 seeds and thinned to the 2 strongest plants per group. Care: Water regularly and fertilize when 6 inches tall. Harvest: Pick continuously when fruit is 6 to 8 inches long. Use a knife or shears. Your Health: Supplies several minerals and vitamins A and C. Growing Tips: Squash like warm soil and are very sensitive to frost so don’t be in a rush to plant zucchini early in spring. Wait until danger of frost has passed and soil has warmed to about 70 F, or about 2 weeks after the last frost date. Mulching plants helps retain moisture and suppress weeds. Mounding soil around the base of the plants can discourage squash borers from laying eggs. Harvest: Check your summer squash as soon as you notice it blooming. Squash grows very fast and can be ready to pick a few days after it blooms. Check your garden every 1 to 2 days after that, because once it starts to producing, it continues steadily throughout the growing season. The more you pick, the more it will produce. For this reason, you may want to consider having only a few plants unless you intend to feed the whole neighborhood. Remove the squashes by cutting them from the vine with a sharp knife. They have very thin skins and bruise easily, so handle them gently. Wearing gloves is advisable, as the stalks may scratch or irritate your hands. Store your squash in the refrigerator, unwashed. Moisture encourages decay of fresh vegetables, so place them in a plastic bag in the vegetable crisper. If you have a large amount, place them in a plastic bag and handle them as little as possible to prevent bruising the delicate skin. They'll stay fresh for 3 to 5 days, under the proper storage conditions. Germination: Seeds Packets are labeled with seed name and sowing details. Seeds have not been pretreated unless specified in the listing. Seed is not a specific Cultivar (Variety) unless specified in the listing. I have provided what I believe to be a good overview on this page (which you are free to print for further reference), however, it is still recommended to check specialist literature for more details and practices specific to your climate and soil conditions to avoid mistakes in the germination and growing process.
